The Captain's Wife Hot Toddy

As the autumnal days are drawing in and we love to meet our friends and family outside, there is nothing better than to sit together and sip a hot gin punch or toddy. We often take a little pomegranate or apple gin punch in a thermos to share on a long walk with a friend or brew one up on an open fire. The longer the fruits and spices are stewed in the juice the better!

The first recipe, with The Captain’s Wife, is made with Pomegranate Juice but one can use apple or grape juice. We use Pomegranate as it's a key botanical ingredient in The Captain’s Wife Gin.

The  Captain’s Wife Pomegranate Punch

200 ml of The Captain’s Wife Gin

1 Cinnamon Stick

Handful of cloves

½ grated Nutmeg

800 ml Pomegranate Juice

50 g Brown sugar or  a spoonful of honey

Freshly Squeezed Juice of half an Orange

Method

Put all the ingredients except the gin into a saucepan and heat gently for 5 minutes. Add sugar or honey to taste.

Remove from the heat and add gin and strain into heat resistant glasses or mugs.

Garnish with a fresh slice of orange or star anise and cinnamon stick.

To experiment with this recipe the Pomegranate juice can be exchanged for Apple or Grape juice. Also Agave can be used instead of  Honey.

Another variation is to use  Black Tea instead of juice. We have tried this with Earl Grey tea and Morwyn Gin as Earl Grey tea is a key ingredient in our Morwyn GIn.

Morwyn Tea Toddy

1 Cup water

5 cloves

I stick cinnamon

1 star anise

1 tablespoon black tea

1 Teaspoon honey

2 oz Morwyn  gin

1 wedge lemon

Method

Combine water and spices

Bring water to just below boiling point

Add the Earl Grey tea leaves and steep for a few minutes then strain into a tea cup or large mug. Stir in the honey and pour the gin over the back of a spoon into the brew. Put in a lemon wedge if desired. Delicious!
