THE CAPTAIN'S WIFE PORTSIDE AND YUZU

YUZU   Yuzu is a  thick skinned sour cross between a mandarin and the strange, bitter Icheng Papeda. The Yuzu fruit originally came from China and made it's way to Japan in 600 AD. While the fruit is not particularly tasty, the rind exudes a complex, fruity citrus fragrance beloved by Japanese cooks. It also has other uses - at Solstice time in Japan one can bathe in hot water infused with Yuzu.  Yuzu happens to be a fantastic cocktail ingredient and works extremely well with gin and  is also an enchanting addition to flavoured Sake and Shochu based liqeur. Apart from Yuzu liqueur there are a variety of ways to introduce this wonderful flavour into your gin cocktails such...

Mulberry Bramble

Mulberry Bramble   Last year we  posted a Blackberry Bramble which was a classic cocktail and delicious. This year the Mulberry Tree in the garden in New Quay, which is huge and therefore must be very old, has produced enormous berries. We love a Wild Foraged Cocktail here at Welsh Sisters so have incorporated Mulberries into this cocktail. And we have various experimental ways of delivering some sweetness  as below - could we call this cocktail a Morwydden Morwyn? A Morwyn Mulberry Tree? We hope so as there isn't a prickly bramble in sight.   INGREDIENTS 6 Fresh Mulberries 1 Tablespoon of Maple Syrup 1/2 cup crushed ice 30 ml (1oz) Fresh Lemon Juice 45 ml (1.5 oz ) MORWYN DRY...

Mother's Day Cocktail - Bendith y Mamau.

Blessings of the Mothers Cocktail - Bendith y Mamau The 'Bendith y Mamau' or Blessings of the Mothers are fairy folk that live in the mythological landscape of the Welsh Countryside believed to be the children of Mother Earth. What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than with a cocktail that lends itself to dreaming of all that comes from the earth. This is a special cocktail which incorporates  luscious Absinthe. Absinthe has in the past been associated with degrees of louche behaviour  and nicknamed the Green Devil. Consequently it was banned in the 19th,  and most of the 20th, century in many countries around the world. In the film 'Moulin Rouge'  Absinthe was portrayed as  the  Green...

Maiden's Blush

MAIDEN'S BLUSH The Maiden's Blush is a beautifully soft cocktail which sings with The Captain's Wife Portside Special Edition Dry Gin. The blush colour adds to its allure and when it is served in these vintage inspired martini glasses the romance of times past beckons. MORWYN WEN COCKTAIL

MORWYN WEN - Blessed maid. Morwyn Wen is a fresh green cocktail chosen to celebrate the beginning of spring on  February 2nd.  This day is associated with Bridie, also known as St Brigid or St Ffraid, who is identified with water, fire, poetry, healing and the hearth.  The Welsh poet Iorweth Fynglwyd, who loved in St Brides Major in South Glamorgan in the 15th Century, wrote a poem in honour of St Ffraid – he refers to her as Morwyn Wen – Blessed Maid. To celebrate the day of St Ffraid– we have adapted this gorgeous green cocktail which can be made with lavish amounts of Morwyn Dry Gin, sumptuous Green Chartreuse, fresh lime juice and mint.   This cocktail...
